Renault has always had a sports model in their best-selling B segment class lineup. This tradition has continued since the first Cinq, and has continued in the hot hatch version of the Clio (sold in Japan as the Lutecia).

The sports model of the 4th generation Clio, the Clio R.S. 200 EDC, was announced at the 2012 Fall Paris Motor Show as the ultimate B segment model in Renault history. At the same time, the attention of many stoic enthusiasts was turned to back the 3rd generation Clio R.S. While the 4th generation model was a 1.6 L turbo with a dual-clutch 2-pedal transmission and paddle shifters, the 3rd generation was a 2.0 L non-turbo with a 3-pedal 6-speed manual. Fans who desired the classic hot hatch feel were attracted to the quick, direct response of a highly tuned normally aspirated engine, and the feel of a manual shifter.

The engine and aerodynamic parts of the Clio R.S. was developed by Renault Sport. The 1,998 cc straight-4 DOHC had matured over time, and in post-2010 models, the power is 29 BHP greater than the first models at 200 BHP. With the introduction of aerodynamic parts fed back from Renault F1, the top speed of the car is also higher than pre-2009 models by 9 km/h, at 225 km/h. Of course handling performance has been improved further, and the car is regarded highly as the best sports model in its class.
