After a sluggish racing season in 1959, Cooper wanted to field a car that would compete with the faster Lotus vehicles. This result won the Cooper T53, a more modern vehicle that, despite late entry for the 1960 season, would dominate the Grand Prix circuit with the racing duo of Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren at the helm. After a second place finish at Silverstone on May 14 and another second place finish in Monaco, Brabham would win the Dutch Grand Prix wire-to-wire. Two weeks later, Brabham and McLaren would finish one -two of the Belgian Grand Prix, and first and third at Rheims. Overall, the Cooper team would
win five races in 1960.

Although the Cooper T53 would not make a direct impact on American racing in the early 1960s, it was a pioneer amongst rear-engined racecars, and heralded the change that was coming shortly to racing on both sides of the Atlantic. By 1964, rear-engined cars would dominate the racing landscape, and the Cooper T53 was the trendsetter in this regard.
